In 415 BC, Euripides writes the "Women of Troy". Sartre reworked the play and reminded the French of the price of colonialism.  "The war leaves no winners and no losers," Sartre says, "the Greeks destroyed Troy, but did not derive any blessing from their victory." In 1983, in the midst of the First Lebanon War, the play was staged and caused a great deal of noise. 
The Tmuna Ensemble revisits one of the great plays written about the price of war.

On the play 
The Prince of Troy kidnaps the wife of the King of Sparta. This is a cause for war. The peoples of Greece unite and lay siege to Troy. After ten years of siege, just before the Greeks retreat, Odysseus offers a ploy. The army pretends to leave the shores of Troy and ostensibly leaves a gift for the reconciliation of the gods, a huge wooden horse in which warriors hide. The Trojans celebrate the victory and bring the horse into their city. In the middle of the night the warriors get off the horse, open the gates to the Greek army and destroy Troy. 
Against the backdrop of the city walls rising in flames we first meet the women of Troy. After burying the men they are taken to the ships of the Greeks, those who murdered their loved ones. Are the spoils. They will soon become slaves. At the beginning of the play, Talthibius, the Greek army envoy, informs Hakuba, Queen of Troy, how she and all the girls with her will lose their freedom. Cassandra, the daughter of the Cuban, rejoices when she learns that Agamemnon, the king of Greece, wants her as a concubine. Everyone thinks she went crazy, but she knows that reuniting with Agamemnon will lead to their common death. For revenge she is willing to sacrifice herself. Andromaka, the heroic wife of Hector, the son of Cuba, embraces her infant son, the last heir to the royal family. The Greeks demand to take the baby to throw it off the walls. Helena, at the time when the war broke out, is fighting for her life against Menelaus, her betrayed husband. And between them all passes Cuba. We see her becoming a kingdom, committed to respect and observance of the rules of the ceremony, to a mother weeping over the death of her children, an uninhibited woman, unwilling to accept the arbitrariness of men’s actions.
